In a private well system, the pump draws up water from the groundwater supply and pumps it into a pressure tank. The pressurization that occurs inside the tank provides the force that gives a building running water. When the pressure in the tank drops below a certain level, the pump cycles on and then cycles back off when the tank is at an acceptable level.
