A brake drum is a cylindrical component of a vehicle's braking system that works in conjunction with brake shoes. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the brake shoes are forced outward against the inner surface of the drum, creating friction that slows down or stops the vehicle. Brake drums are typically made from cast iron or aluminum, designed to withstand the intense heat generated during braking cycles.

Take a close look at the brake drum and its surrounding components. If there are visible rust or corrosion, this could be contributing to the stickiness. A combination of heat, dirt, and rust can sometimes cause the drum to stick to the brake shoes.

One of the unique features of drum brakes is their design. Unlike disc brakes, where the braking action occurs between a caliper and rotor, drum brakes use a more enclosed system. This design can offer improved performance in specific scenarios, such as holding vehicles parked on an incline, thanks to the self-energizing effect where the rotation of the drum helps to apply additional force to the brake shoes.

Understanding Drum Brake Line Diagrams

Once you have access to the brake assembly, begin disassembling the old brake shoes. Take note of the configuration and the placement of the springs and other components. It can be helpful to take a photo for reference. Use the drum brake spring tool to safely remove the springs without bending or damaging them.
