The journey of titanium dioxide begins with the mining of ilmenite, rutile, or anatase, which are the three main titanium ore minerals. These minerals are then transported to a titanium dioxide factory where they undergo a series of processing steps.

CSPI says it might reconsider its rating if specifications for food-grade titanium dioxide in the U.S. are updated to ensure nanoparticles are minimized, and new studies are conducted to assess its capacity to cause cancer or other health problems.

According to CCM, many enterprises, which belong to the top exporting producers of TiO2 in China, will speed up their efforts to go public. Reasons are the strong rebound of the TiO2 market in China as well as the positive view on 2017.

Application:
1. Due to its rheological and optical properties, Lithopone offers technical and economic advantages wherever organic and inorganic resin systems need to be relatively highly pigmented for specific applications. Lithopone has therefore traditionally been used in putties, mastics, jointing and sealing compounds, primers, undercoats and marking paints. In powder coatings it is possible to replace TiO2 partially, very economically.

2. The low Mohs' hardness of Lithopone leads to low abrasiveness in comparison with TiO2.

3. Lithopone 30 % (= 30% zinc sulfide share) is proven to be of particular use as a TiO2 Substitute in thermoplastic masterbatches. Even at very high pigment loadings it disperses easily. A masterbatch containing 50 % TiO2 and 25 % Lithopone 30 % DS has the same hiding power as one containing 60 %TiO2. Cost savings are strongly related to the price ratio of Lithopone and TiO2 and the price of for example polyethylene or polypropylene.

4. The Lithopone batch has a much higher extrusion rate too. Furthermore the impact strength of many thermoplastics such as PP and ABS can be noticeably improved by using Lithopone as a TiO2 substitute. Generally spoken, Lithopone can be used at loadings up to 80 % by weight without causing polymer breakdown

One of the most important properties of TiO2 is its photocatalytic activity, which allows it to break down organic compounds under UV light. This property has led to the development of self-cleaning surfaces and air purifiers that use TiO2 to remove pollutants from the air.

Lithopone is a white pigment (PW5) co-precipitated from solutions of zinc and barium salts according to the following reaction:

The properties of lithopone are very suitable for use in the production of coatings. Because the ingredients of lithopone are zinc sulfide and barium sulfate, and the more zinc sulfide content, the stronger its covering power. This indicates a paint product with strong white covering power. It is different from water in that it reacts with acid but does not react with alkali. It has a wide range of uses. Because its structural properties are similar to titanium dioxide and its price is relatively cheap, it can also be used as a substitute for some titanium dioxide. Lithopone can be used for coloring paints, inks, pigments, rubber, paper, leather, enamel, etc.
