Slurry Pump VS Mud Pump

From an operational point of view the stuffing box is different as it requires some leakage to ensure lubrication and to prevent heat build up. The mechanical seal box should be leak free.

With the standard flush schedule, the flow is usually adjusted by compressing the packings until a few drops of water are observed leaking from the seals on the drive side. In a quench schedule the flow rate is set by adjusting the inlet valve, while a valve is used on the exhaust side to maintain the correct seal tank pressure. If the outlet water from the seal box is too hot, the flow rate is increased until the outlet water cools, while still maintaining the correct seal box pressure.

The basic mechanical seal flushing programme is very simple. It requires that a clear/clean fluid (usually water) is introduced into the space between the actual seal and the impeller side outlet restriction. The flushing fluid is introduced at a pressure higher than the pumping pressure, thus ensuring positive outflow/flushing of the mechanical seal and a clean operating environment.

A variety of factors must be considered to ensure a satisfactory service. Here are tips for choosing the right >pump. In applications ranging from processing to wastewater treatment, plants often have to handle slurries. Handling this mixture of liquids and solids can be challenging and difficult. Some of the key factors in slurry pumping are the size and nature of the solids in the liquid and the type of wear they cause. Another is the corrosiveness of the liquid or mixture.

As wear is a function of speed, slurry pumps should be operated at the lowest possible speed; units typically run at 1,200 rpm or less. Often, direct coupling between the pump and a low-speed motor or other drive makes the most sense. On the other hand, many other applications favour gearboxes to meet the required speed and operating point. In services where variable flow rates are required, variable frequency drives are used to provide the necessary continuous speed variation.

As the slurry is collected at the bottom of the tower, more rubber lined pumps are required to transfer the slurry to storage tanks, tailings ponds, waste treatment facilities or filter presses. Depending on the type of FGD process, other pump models are available for slurry discharge, pre-scrubber recovery and catch basin applications.

Why would maintenance personnel want to adjust a high-speed rotating impeller to a static lining component while the unit is running? Even if interlocking devices are used to prevent static and non-static components from coming into contact, how credible are these features and what are the implications for pump wear parts, bearings and motors if these two components come into contact?

There are three different >types of slurry pump impellers; open, closed, and semi-open. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, depending on the application. Some are better for solids handling, others are better for high efficiency.

Slurry pumps are usually larger than standard pumps, have more horsepower and use stronger bearings and shafts. The most common >type of slurry pump is the centrifugal pump. These pumps use a rotating impeller to move the slurry, similar to the way aqueous liquids pass through a standard centrifugal pump.
