For pumping abrasive slurries, these types of pumps can also be made from specialised high-wear alloys. Hardened stainless steel is also a common choice for abrasive slurries.

Dredge pumps are designed to transfer large quantities of fluids and solids.

Vortex pumps use patented seal technology that utilizes a double mechanical seal setup and a separate seal flushing system. This allows the sealing surface to be kept cool at all times without causing the slurry to overheat the seal and crack the surface.

Pumps used in the cement industry handle most fine particles at low pressures, so the casing can be of lightweight construction. In rock pumping, the casing and impeller must be able to resist slamming, so they must be built thick and strong.

Cavitation can occur due to surges; a very effective way to solve this problem is to install a choke on the pump head to increase the pressure on the casing, which then absorbs the surge, or to add a choke to the output to reduce the surge.
