The degree of hydroxyethylation refers to the substitution of hydroxyl groups on the cellulose backbone with ethylene oxide, impacting the polymer's water solubility. Higher degrees of hydroxyethylation generally result in better water solubility due to the increased hydrophilic nature of the molecule.
