If skillets and frying pans are the same vessels, why is there confusion between the terminology? Much of the confusion between these terms lies with the generic phrase pots and pans. Along with skillets, there are saute pans, sheet pans, roasting pans, saucepans, and bundt pans. In most kitchens, the word pan is a general term that refers to not just a frying pan but a saute pan.

 Dutch ovens are extremely versatile and can be used for a variety of cooking methods.  Dutch ovens are perfect for stews, soups, chili, braised meats, and roasted vegetables.  A Dutch oven can also be used to bake bread, making the Dutch oven a must-have for home bakers.

However, the issue arises when the pan you’re using is designed for a specific purpose. For instance, a stainless steel French skillet is not suitable for cooking crepes as effectively as a non-stick frying pan since the crepes will stick to the uncoated flat bottom, making them difficult to flip.
