By the time you reach the end of this guide you’ll feel confident in your understanding of why wrought iron fences stand a cut above aluminum – and many other types of fencing for that matter. 

The best construction method for iron fence is one that is strong and looks good from both sides.  Below are a couple of photos showing how we build our Stronghold Iron fence with a punched rail and fully welded construction at the picket-to-rail intersection and for the decorative finial tip.  You can see the picket (upright) goes through the middle of the punched rail for a strong connection and clean look from both sides of the fence:

In the case of residential construction, so-called ‘warm’ aluminium profiles are becoming increasingly popular. This means that the profile construction consists of two metal sections, joined by a thermal plastic insert, such as glass fibre-reinforced polyamide. Such a profile generally has three or four chambers, with additional polymer foam filling in the middle chamber.

Whilst this article concentrates on exterior aluminium windows, there are the same options and choices for windows used internally.

Finally, as steel is simply iron with more effort put into evenly distributing the carbon throughout the material, you can actually have a steel fence and call it wrought iron and still be perfectly accurate. It may even help you trip up the pedantic know-it-all in your life.
