A wide range of industries rely on oil seals to ensure optimal operation of mechanical assemblies. Components in the industrial and automotive fields, such as pumps, fans, electric motors, and other rotating or moving parts, use oil seals to maintain lubrication and keep contaminants from entering the shaft. Seals are especially useful in applications exposed to extreme environmental temperatures and pressures. 

The shaft on which the oil seal is mounted has to be ground to a rough surface finish. The shaft also should be hardened to prevent grooves forming on the shaft when the pressure is exerted by the spring on the seal. The area where the seal is fitted also has to be ground to prevent grooves that tend to wear out the lip of the oil seal faster than normal.

Oil seals made of HNBR are characterised by excellent properties that include high resistance to mineral oils with additives, low steam and gas permeability, good cold flexibility down to -30 °C depending on type, good ozone resistance and friction resistance. HNBR seals withstand heat up to 150°C.
